New Delhi, July 18, 2026: India captain Salima Tete has outlined an ambitious target for the Indian Women's Hockey Team ahead of the FIH Hockey Women's World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026, stating that the squad is determined to reach the final as they prepare to take on the world's best from August 15 to 30.
Entering the tournament on the back of an unbeaten title-winning campaign in the FIH Nations Cup, India will look to carry their winning momentum into the World Cup. Drawn in Pool D, the team will begin its campaign against China on August 16 before facing South Africa on August 18 and England on August 20.
The upcoming edition will mark Salima Tete's first Hockey World Cup as captain. Leading a 20-member squad comprising experienced internationals and emerging talent, she believes the team has the confidence and togetherness needed to challenge for top honours under Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne.
Reaching the Final Is the Ultimate Goal
Reflecting on her first World Cup as captain, Salima described the opportunity as both exciting and humbling.
"It is a very special feeling for me. Of course, I am excited, but I am also a little nervous because this is the biggest tournament in hockey and leading India is a huge responsibility."
She said every player dreams of representing the country at a World Cup and believes this squad has the potential to go further than previous campaigns.
"We played good hockey in the last World Cup, but the results did not go the way we wanted. This time, we are all talking about going much further and reaching the final. That is the dream we all share."
Salima added that leading by example through consistent performances remains her primary responsibility while also supporting the younger members of the team.
Team Unity and Communication Key to India's Campaign
The captain highlighted communication as one of India's biggest strengths, saying the experienced players have created an environment where youngsters feel comfortable seeking guidance both on and off the field.
According to Salima, strong bonding within the squad will be crucial during a tournament where every player has an important role to play.
Handling Pressure Will Be India's Biggest Test
While acknowledging the quality of opposition in Pool D, Salima believes India's biggest challenge will be embracing pressure positively rather than allowing it to become a burden.
She said the team has prepared thoroughly and must remain mentally strong, trust its game plan and continue supporting one another throughout the tournament.
China Opener Presents Early Challenge
India's opening fixture against China is expected to be one of the toughest matches in the group stage. Despite previous encounters, Salima insisted her side will approach the contest with confidence.
"My message to the team will be simple: play with confidence and a fighting spirit. We should not change our game because of the opposition. Instead, we want to play our own style of hockey."
She also stressed the importance of maintaining intensity from the opening whistle until the final moments of the match.
Backing the Young Players
Salima revealed that her advice to the younger members of the squad has been to trust the hard work that earned them a place in the national team and to enjoy the occasion without putting unnecessary pressure on themselves.
She reminded them that mistakes are part of the game and encouraged them to remain confident while expressing themselves freely on the field.
Playing for India Remains the Biggest Motivation
According to the captain, representing India continues to be the team's greatest source of inspiration. She credited the coaching staff, led by Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne, for fostering a positive environment and encouraging the players to trust their preparation.
With confidence high after recent success and a balanced squad combining youth and experience, India will aim to make a deep run at the FIH Hockey Women's World Cup 2026 and turn Salima Tete's dream of reaching the final into reality.
