Global Chess League Launches Road2GCL Initiative Ahead of Season 4 in Bengaluru

Marking World Chess Day, the Global Chess League (GCL), a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, has announced the return of its community engagement initiative, Road2GCL, ahead of Season 4 of the league.

Scheduled to roll out over the next six weeks, Road2GCL will feature competitions, community events and creator collaborations, bringing together players, chess clubs, schools, content creators and enthusiasts before the league begins in Bengaluru from September 3 to 14, 2026.

Road2GCL Aims to Expand Chess Community Engagement

At the heart of the initiative is the belief that the journey to the Global Chess League should be just as engaging as the tournament itself. Through multiple activities leading up to Season 4, Road2GCL seeks to create meaningful opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to participate, interact with the broader chess community and become part of the league's growing ecosystem.

The initiative has been designed to extend the excitement of the Global Chess League beyond match days by encouraging participation from grassroots players, educational institutions and digital creators.

Road2GCL Contenders Returns with Pathway to Face GCL Stars

The flagship programme under the initiative is Road2GCL Contenders, a multi-stage competition that offers aspiring players an opportunity to compete against Global Chess League stars through a structured qualification process culminating in a special showdown.

During the inaugural edition, Jose Martinez claimed the Open title, WGM Mai Narva won the Women's category, while IM Faustino Oro emerged victorious in the Under-21 competition. The 2026 edition aims to once again showcase emerging talent from across the global chess community.

Magnus Carlsen and Divya Deshmukh Among Season 4 Highlights

Season 4 of the Global Chess League will be held in Bengaluru from September 3 to 14 and will feature 36 of the world's leading Grandmasters representing six franchises.

Reigning World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen will return to the Global Chess League and compete in India for the first time, while reigning FIDE Women's World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh is set to make her much-anticipated league debut, strengthening what promises to be one of the most competitive franchise chess line-ups to date.

Community Events and Creator Collaborations

Beyond the Contenders competition, Road2GCL will introduce Shining Stars, a programme focused on community-led chess activities across clubs and educational institutions, along with Road2GCL Creators, which will see creators document and share the journey to Season 4 with wider audiences.

These initiatives are intended to broaden the appeal of chess while creating more opportunities for fans and aspiring players to connect with the sport ahead of the league.

Building on Global Chess League's Innovative Format

Since its launch, the Global Chess League has introduced several innovations to professional chess, including a mixed-team franchise format, the unique icon board and simultaneous team battles featuring many of the world's leading Grandmasters.

With Road2GCL, the league continues its mission of making chess more accessible and engaging by extending the tournament experience beyond the competition itself and inviting players and fans to be part of the journey before the opening move is played in Bengaluru.
