Cairo: The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has strongly criticised the officiating in Egypt's dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, alleging that several controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions significantly influenced the outcome of the match.

Egypt looked set to produce one of the biggest upsets of the tournament after taking a 2-0 lead against the defending champions with just 11 minutes remaining. However, Argentina staged a remarkable comeback by scoring three late goals, including a stoppage-time winner, to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the EFA said it would not remain silent over what it described as the improper use of VAR during the high-stakes encounter.

"Several key incidents raised serious concerns and left profound questions about the consistency and fairness of decisions that directly influenced the course of the game," the federation said.

The federation added that football experts and specialist analysts from both Egypt and abroad had highlighted several "controversial and influential refereeing incidents" during the match.

"This underlines the importance of maintaining the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and transparency in match officiating, particularly in a competition of the stature and significance of the FIFA World Cup 2026."

Reports Claim Official Complaint Submitted to FIFA

According to multiple media reports, EFA President Hany Abo Rida has submitted an official complaint to FIFA against French referee Francois Letexier and his officiating team. FIFA had not publicly commented on the reported complaint at the time of publication.

VAR Decisions Spark Major Debate

The biggest flashpoint came in the 62nd minute when Mostafa Zico appeared to have doubled Egypt's advantage. However, following a VAR review, the goal was disallowed after officials identified a foul by an Egyptian player in the build-up.

Egypt's frustrations intensified late in the contest when Hamdy Fathy went down inside the penalty area under a challenge. The referee waved away appeals for a penalty before Argentina launched a counterattack and scored the decisive goal in the 92nd minute.

Experts Question Consistency of VAR

Simon Chadwick, Professor of Afro-Eurasian Sport at Emlyon Business School in Shanghai, questioned why VAR intervened over the earlier incident when the on-field officials had not initially awarded a foul.

"A logical solution to the VAR issue would be for fans and viewers to listen to an assessment of the alleged offence, hear the various arguments, and have a clear insight into the basis for a decision," Chadwick told Al Jazeera.

While acknowledging that Egypt's players should have managed their emotions better, Chadwick argued that the VAR intervention created "a sense of injustice".

"This technology was supposed to minimise doubt and bring consistency. Instead, its use during this match had significant cognitive and behavioural effects."

Football Pundits Also Voice Concern

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan and captain Mohamed Salah were among those left disappointed after the match. Several former players and television analysts also questioned the officiating.

Former England goalkeeper Rob Green criticised the decision to review the incident that led to Zico's disallowed goal.

"Surely, this is not within VAR's realm to review this. It's a full length of the pitch away," Green said during Fox's broadcast.

Former England captain Alan Shearer also questioned the consistency of the decisions.

"Either both are fouls, or neither is. But they told us they won't re-referee," Shearer wrote on social media.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright argued that Mohamed Salah had been fouled in another key incident and deserved similar scrutiny from VAR.

"If you're going to pull it back for Argentina on the edge of the box to disallow a goal, you have to pull it back for this one with Mo Salah. He's been caught."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also questioned the consistency of VAR.

"If that was in the Premier League, La Liga or Serie A, it would have been a goal even after VAR review."

The controversy has reignited debate over the consistency of VAR officiating at the FIFA World Cup, with Egypt's heartbreaking exit likely to remain one of the tournament's most discussed refereeing flashpoints.
