President Unveils Durand Cup 2026 Trophies at Rashtrapati Bhavan

New Delhi, July 7, 2026: President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday unveiled and flagged off the trophies of the Durand Cup Tournament 2026 at a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre.

The ceremony marked the formal commencement of one of Asia's oldest football tournaments, with the President extending her best wishes to all participating teams and players.

Addressing the gathering, the President congratulated the former and current officials, organisers and sportspersons associated with the Durand Cup, stating that the tournament has provided a valuable platform for nurturing talented football players over the years.

She expressed happiness over the inclusion of new teams in this year's edition, including one from Sri Lanka, which will compete for the Durand Cup, President's Cup and the Shimla Trophy. She said the participation of new teams would further enhance the popularity of the historic tournament.

The President described football as one of the most popular sports in the world and said the game represents excellence, unity and the true spirit of sportsmanship.

Referring to the FIFA World Cup currently underway, she noted that the world's best teams and players are competing to bring glory to their respective countries. She added that football has a unique ability to connect people across borders and inspire millions through exceptional performances on the field.

The President said India still has a long journey ahead to establish itself as a global force in football. She expressed confidence that tournaments such as the Durand Cup would play an important role in identifying and developing football talent across the country.

Highlighting the broader significance of sports, the President said the spirit of sportsmanship is not confined to the field of play. It teaches resilience, cooperation, discipline and the ability to face adversity with determination.
