Why Skilled Workers Are Still Being Judged by Paperwork—and How Skyljo Is Changing That

A carpenter may have years of experience but struggle to prove it on paper. A plumber may know exactly how to solve a problem on site, yet a conventional interview may reveal little about that ability. Even a civil engineer’s qualifications and references cannot always show how effectively that person can perform when faced with a real-world task. This disconnect between what skilled professionals can actually do and what conventional hiring processes can measure has created a persistent challenge across construction, maintenance, manufacturing and infrastructure.
The result is a cycle of mismatched hiring, field trials, additional supervision, rework and training costs. At the heart of the problem is a simple gap: there has been no reliable way to objectively assess practical capability before deployment. It is this problem that Ameet Padiyar, Founder of Skyljo, set out to address through an AI-led skill assessment platform for India’s workforce.
Skyljo’s proposition is built around shifting the focus from credentials to demonstrated expertise. Rather than depending primarily on resumes, interviews and references, its platform uses video-based, task-focused assessments to evaluate how professionals execute practical work. Candidates perform tasks that simulate work-related scenarios, while AI assesses factors including tool handling, sequence of actions, accuracy, compliance and completion quality. E-KYC and face recognition are used to verify identity and prevent proxies.
The distinction is important because the platform is not designed to measure how well someone can present themselves on camera. It is intended to measure how well they can perform the job.
“We constantly verify the results of assessments based on real-life performance and feedback from employers. This process is crucial because our aim is not to assess how good people can make videos, but rather how well they can work,” Padiyar explains.
That approach also addresses the productivity consequences of inaccurate skill assessment. When a worker’s capabilities are incorrectly judged, the impact can extend across project schedules, quality, supervision requirements, rework, safety and client satisfaction. Skyljo’s early deployments, according to Padiyar, have shown that calibrated skill-test results can help employers make faster hiring decisions and enable appropriately skilled workers to become productive from day one.
But Skyljo’s role extends beyond recruitment. The platform is designed to quantify training outcomes and identify specific skill gaps among workers and students. This could move organisations and educational institutions away from treating attendance, course completion and certificates as the primary indicators of training success and towards measuring what a person can actually do.
For employers, this creates a common lens for evaluating professionals with different educational backgrounds, experience levels and qualifications. The company sees skill calibration potentially becoming a universal language of employability, particularly in fields such as construction, electrical, plumbing, fabrication and maintenance, where practical application can matter as much as formal qualifications.
The model also places greater value on workers whose practical abilities may not be adequately represented by formal credentials. Skyljo aims to make evidence of performance more important than paperwork, while providing workers with an electronic credential that demonstrates their assessed skills. Its assessments are intended to be accessible, multilingual, mobile-enabled and task-focused.
Interestingly, educational and vocational institutions have emerged as a significant area of interest for the platform. Padiyar says the demand reflects a broader concern: organisations increasingly want to know whether students are genuinely job-ready rather than simply certificate-ready. The larger gap, therefore, may not only be a shortage of skills but also a shortage of reliable ways to see and validate those skills.
Looking towards 2031, Skyljo does not see itself merely as an AI-powered recruitment or skill-certification platform. Its larger ambition is to build infrastructure for the skilled labour force, where talent can be assessed, validated, certified, deployed and continuously developed throughout a career. The envisioned ecosystem would bring assessment, training recommendations, skill development and company recognition together, allowing a worker’s skills to remain portable, verifiable and continuously evolving.
In that vision, the question defining employability could gradually change—from “What qualification do you have?” to “What can you actually do, and how has your capability improved over time?” For a workforce where practical expertise can often be greater than what paperwork reveals, that shift could make skill assessment not just a hiring tool, but a more equitable foundation for recognising talent.
