From Marks to Meaning: How Smartail Is Rebuilding the Role of AI in Classroom Assessment
For many teachers, an assessment does not end when the last answer sheet is collected. It begins another demanding cycle: reading responses, interpreting what students meant, assigning marks and trying to determine what those marks actually reveal. A student may score 45 or 85, but the number alone can leave a crucial question unanswered—why is the student struggling, and which concept needs attention?
That gap between measuring performance and understanding learning became increasingly apparent as Smartail began speaking with schools.
Founded in 2019, Smartail emerged from that challenge with a different proposition: assessment should be more than an administrative exercise. Its approach is centred on treating every answer sheet as a source of learning intelligence, capable of revealing misconceptions, learning gaps and patterns in student progress.
Rather than building another AI grading tool, the company set out to develop an AI assessment platform that could help educators move beyond marks towards evidence-led academic decisions.
Understanding More Than Handwriting
At the centre of that proposition is DeepGrade, Smartail’s technology for evaluating both handwritten and digital descriptive answers. The challenge, however, extends far beyond recognising handwriting.
Descriptive responses can vary significantly in language, structure and expression, while students may demonstrate the same understanding through entirely different answers. For an automated evaluation system to be useful in a classroom, it must determine whether the underlying concept is correct while maintaining consistency across different students, subjects and writing styles.
“Handwriting recognition is only the starting point. The real challenge is not recognising handwriting—it is understanding intent,” says Swaminathan Ganesan, Co-Founder & CEO, Smartail.
Smartail addresses this through structured answer keys and marking schemes configured by teachers and schools. Instead of grading against a generic definition of correctness, DeepGrade evaluates responses against the rubric educators have defined for a particular subject or curriculum.
The system is also tested across varied handwriting quality, language patterns and curricula. According to the company, DeepGrade now grades more than three million marks a month with dependable accuracy.
From Automated Grading to Learning Intelligence
The larger proposition, however, lies in what happens after automated grading. DeepGrade maps performance against specific concepts, question types and skills within a syllabus, allowing educators to identify patterns that a score alone may conceal.
A student who performs well on direct recall questions but repeatedly loses marks on multi-step problems, for instance, may have an application gap rather than a knowledge gap.
At the classroom or school level, those patterns can reveal whether a cohort needs revision, a different teaching approach or more individualised support. Smartail deliberately leaves that decision with the educator. Its role is to provide a clearer evidence base for that judgement rather than prescribe the intervention.
Keeping Teachers at the Centre
That philosophy also shapes the company’s approach to trust and responsible AI in education. Teachers can review, override or adjust scores before they are finalised, while DeepGrade provides visibility into why marks were awarded or withheld.
The objective is to make AI-powered assessment a faster and more consistent starting point while keeping professional judgement at the centre.
“The goal has never been to remove human judgement from assessment. It is to give teachers a faster, more consistent starting point so their judgement can focus on the student, not the paperwork,” Ganesan says.
Taking Assessment Intelligence Beyond the Classroom
Smartail is also taking its assessment approach beyond individual classrooms. Its DeepGrade National Assessment initiative combines AI-generated question papers reviewed by subject experts, automated grading and pan-India benchmarking.
At scale, comparable assessment structures across hundreds of schools could reveal broader patterns in learning gaps—including concepts that prove consistently difficult across regions or differences between urban and rural schools.
The company sees such intelligence as potentially useful for curriculum design, teacher-training priorities and resource allocation, while keeping benchmarking constructive rather than turning it into a ranking exercise.
Adapting AI Assessment Across Markets
The same architecture is being adapted for international markets including the UAE, Singapore and the UK. While assessment practices and curricula vary, Smartail says the core AI engine remains consistent, with configuration layers adapted to question banks, marking schemes, language nuances and curriculum requirements across frameworks such as IB, IGCSE and national curricula.
Looking Towards 2031
Looking towards 2031, Smartail’s ambition extends beyond becoming a leading AI assessment platform. Assessment, in its vision, is only the entry point to a broader Assessment Intelligence layer connecting assessment with personalised learning paths, targeted remediation, curriculum improvement and institutional decision-making.
The larger ambition is therefore not to make teachers less necessary, but to give them more time and better evidence to do what technology cannot: understand students in context, mentor them, motivate them and adapt teaching to their individual needs.
For Smartail, the future of education technology is not one where AI replaces the teacher—it is one where better intelligence allows the teacher to matter even more.
